About The Village

The ancient Viking village of Ulleskelf is situated in Selby District on the the southernmost edge of the Vale of York where North Yorkshire makes its final assault on the West and East Ridings.  Four miles from Tadcaster, it lies next to the tidal stretch of the River Wharfe before it joins the Ouse near Cawood.  Here, in its final reaches the river is, in places, narrow and deep, perfect for fishing and as a former crossing point by ferry.  The Parish includes the village of Ulleskelf and the houses at the former Church Fenton RAF base.

Ulleskelf benefits from close proximity to the A162 and A64 making access to the major road network of the A1, M1 and M62 relatively easy.  Leeds, York and Selby are a 20 minute drive away and the B1223, which runs through the village and thence to Ozendyke, Ryther, Cawood and Wistow, provides an alternative route to York and Selby.  Transport infrastructure includes a station with rail links to Leeds, York and the north-west and a bus service between Tadcaster and Sherburn-in-Elmet.

Ulleskelf is well-served by various amenities: Post Office/General Store; Garage offering general servicing, repairs and MOTs; Public House with kitchen; Methodist and Church of England Chapels; Village Hall; Multi-use Games Area and sports field.

Primary age children generally attend school in Church Fenton, a free school bus being available from Ulleskelf to Kirk Fenton Primary School.  The village is in the Tadcaster Grammar School catchment area and also has a bus for Secondary age children.  There are other excellent schools in the area some of which have transport from the village.
